Fort Kochi and the Periyar
The Portuguese came first, then the Dutch, then the British, and all three built here. What is left is a few square kilometres of warehouses, churches and merchants' houses on the headland at Fort Kochi, with the container port working across the water. It is a place to walk, which in India is rarer than it sounds.
Most journeys begin or end at Kochi because the airport is close, which makes it easy to treat as an arrival hall. It is worth two nights of its own.
- When to go

- How long to stay
