Most visits to Kerala take in a small part of the state.
This one travels its whole length from the south upwards: the beaches below Trivandrum, the canals of Munroe Island, the backwaters, the tea and cardamom hills, a quiet stretch of coast few people stop on, and Fort Kochi to finish. No day's drive is longer than half a day.

Day by day
The plan
- Day 1Arrive in Trivandrum and go straight down to the coast.
- Day 2Kovalam: the lighthouse beach in the morning, the rest of the day at your own pace.
- Days 3–4North to Munroe Island for two days of canals, coir making, and canoe trips early and late in the day.
- Day 5Board a houseboat and spend the night on the backwaters.
- Days 6–7Leave the boat at Mararikulam: a fishing village, a long beach and free time.
- Days 8–9Up into the hills to Thekkady. Periyar lake at dawn, then the spice plantations.
- Days 10–11On through the hills to Munnar. Eravikulam early one morning, the tea estates the other.
- Days 12–13Down to the coast at Arattupuzha, the quietest stop of the journey.
- Day 14Fort Kochi on foot, and Kathakali in the evening.
- Day 15A free morning, then depart from Kochi.
