Kottayam
Kumarakom and the eastern shore
Kumarakom is Vembanad lake seen from its eastern bank: a bird sanctuary, a handful of houses on the water, and none of Alappuzha's traffic.
Behind it the land climbs into rubber. This is Syrian Christian country, with old churches and a kitchen of its own, and most people who come for a night by the lake leave having eaten better than they expected.
