Alappuzha
The backwaters and Marari
The town everyone means when they say backwaters: canals through the middle of it, rice barges moored along the banks, and behind it a large lake, the rivers that feed it, and the canals cut between them for the rice trade.
People live along the water the way people elsewhere live along a street, and boats are how the post arrives.
- When to go

- How long to stay
- Three nights: one on the water, two by the sea.
- Getting there
- Cochin airport to Alappuzha is 85 km, about two hours. The train from Ernakulam takes about an hour.

03 places

01
The backwaters
Best seen slowly and from the water, which is what the kettuvallam was built for. One night aboard is the usual and it is enough; a second is for people who find they do not want to get off.
Our houseboats02
The farm islands
Around the water are farm islands and old teak houses, where you sleep on land and take a boat out in the morning.
03
Marari
A fishing village on the coast, with the boats coming in at dawn and the catch sold on the sand. Where people go after the boat, and where they stay longer than they planned.
