Pathanamthitta
Aranmula, Gavi and the forest
One of the quietest districts in the south. Sabarimala, the forest pilgrimage, is here, and between November and January very large numbers of pilgrims make the climb. It is somebody else's devotion rather than a sight, and the season is a reason to avoid the roads.
The rest of the district is the Pamba river, the snake boats of Aranmula, and the forest road up to Gavi.
- When to go
- September to March. The boats race at Onam, in August or September.
- How long to stay
- A day on the way between the backwaters and the hills, or a night at Gavi.
- Getting there
- Aranmula is about an hour and a half from Alappuzha. Gavi is about four hours from Kochi airport.

02 places

01
Aranmula
A temple town on the Pamba. At Onam the snake boats race here, each with a hundred rowers, and the whole village is on the bank. Aranmula is also known for its mirror, made of polished metal rather than glass by a few families who still know how.

02
Gavi
High in the hills on the western edge of the Periyar reserve. A day here is forest, elephants, and nothing to buy.
