Wayanad
The plateau
Wayanad has no coast at all, and it feels like a different state: a plateau at about 900 metres, with coffee and pepper growing under the trees rather than tea on open hills, and forest that runs on into Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
The district was badly hit by landslides in recent years. Ask us before travelling in heavy monsoon.

Edakkal caves
Rock carvings at least six thousand years old, of figures, wheels and a man with a headdress, reached by a climb that takes about an hour.

Banasura Sagar
The reservoir, with islands that appear as the water drops.

Small roads through coffee and pepper estates, with the forest close at the edges.
